About 140 kilometres for a good cause
At the 12-hour run of the Oberstaufen-Westallgäu Lionsclub, the Mayser running team defied the heat on 30 June, and showed themselves to be in top form. A total of 194 participants signed up for the charity event, in which a five-figure donation was collected. The proceeds went equally to Lebenshilfe, the Kinderschutzbund, the district association of the Bavarian Red Cross and the Caritas Sozialstation in Lindenberg.
Being there is everything
When the starting pistol was fired for the all-day run in the city park at 8:00 am, the temperatures were still pleasant. That would change soon: The thermometer climbed as high as 29 degrees in the midday hours. For the well-trained employees of Mayser, the heat was not a problem. The team of eight runners plus a substitute runner completed 131 laps of 1,050 metres each and was thus able to place well amongst the middle of the pack. The endurance athletes were not about the victory that day; the focus was on the good cause and the fun of running. Two teams were sponsored by Mayser Lindenberg for 500 euros each.
Sports fanatic hat queen
Perseverance was also demonstrated by the audience on this day, as it continuously cheered the runners from 24 teams and provided additional motivation with additional donations. This obviously spurred on the young participants in particular: With 155 completed laps, the 12- and 13-year-old boys from team "We run for life. Gladly." repeated their victory from the previous year. A recognition for their achievements and the total of 3164 completed laps was awarded to all participants by Hat Queen Vanessa Höss in the form of a medal. The queen, freshly crowned in May, had also showed sportsmanship beforehand and took over the baton from the Mayser team in the last round.
Second run for Mayser
Mayser participated in the 12-hour run for the second time already this year. When the Oberstaufen-Westallgäu Lionsclub approached the company last year, Steffen Speißer from the Lindenberg Works Council immediately became enthusiastic: “My wife has been working for Lebenshilfe for 23 years and volunteering for the Kinderschutzbund for almost as long. I know the facilities well and I know that the money is spent wisely there.” His search for active runners in the college back then was quickly successful. Mayser started out in 2017 with two teams and donated 1000 euros. “Next year, of course, we will be back for the 12-hour run,” says a happy Speißer. “Maybe our colleagues from Ulm will support us then too.”
